What can the main contractor deduct?
Set-off for defects, delay or back-charges is allowed to the extent the contract and law permit. It needs notice and support. Unsupported deductions are a common source of claims. See subcontractor payment recovery.
What if the employer is not paying the main contractor?
That is often raised as a defence. Whether it works depends on the pay-when-paid clause and its wording. In many cases the subcontractor's claim stands regardless.
